Stitches and Abbreviations:

  • SL ST – Slip Stitch
  • St/Sts – Stitch(es)
  • Ch – Chain
  • Hdc – Half Double Crochet
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • Tr – Treble Crochet

Special Stitches:

  • Puff Stitch: To craft a Puff Stitch, yarn over, insert your hook into the indicated stitch, yarn over again, and draw up a loop three times (resulting in seven loops on the hook). Yarn over, pull through all loops and secure with a chain-1 to complete the stitch.

  • Cluster Stitch: Create a Cluster Stitch by yarning over, inserting the hook into the designated stitch, and drawing up a loop. Yarn over again and pull through two loops four times, leaving five loops on the hook. Yarn over, and pull through all loops to finish the cluster stitch.

Instructions:

Round 1:
Start with a magic ring, or begin with a chain: create a slip knot, chain five, and join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Chain three (counting as the first double crochet), and work 15 more double crochets into the ring. Close the round with a slip stitch at the top of the initial chain-three. (16 stitches total) Cut the yarn and secure it by fastening it off.

Round 2:
Attach new yarn with a slip stitch into any double crochet (dc). Chain two, work a puff stitch in the same stitch, then continue with a puff stitch in each dc around. Join by slip stitching to the top of the first puff stitch. You should have 16 puff stitches. Cut the yarn and fasten it off.

To create a puff stitch:
Yarn over, insert the hook into the chosen stitch, and draw up a loop, making three loops on the hook. Yarn over again, insert the hook into the same stitch, and pull up a second loop (five loops total). Yarn over once more, insert the hook into the same stitch, and pull up yet another loop (seven loops total). Yarn over, pull through all loops, and chain one to secure the stitch.

Round 3:
Join a new strand of yarn with a slip stitch into any chain-1 space. Chain two. In this round, we’ll make cluster stitches. Start by creating the first cluster stitch differently to accommodate the initial chain-2. Yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch, yarn over again, and pull up a loop. Yarn over once more, and pull through two loops. Repeat this twice more, resulting in four loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all four loops to complete the first cluster. Chain two.

Continue by making a cluster stitch, followed by a chain-2 in each chain-1 space around. Slip the stitch to the top of the first cluster stitch to finish the round. You will end up with 16 cluster stitches. Cut the yarn and fasten it off.

To create a cluster stitch:
Yarn over, insert the hook into the designated space and draw up a loop. Yarn over again, and pull through two loops. Repeat this three more times, finishing with five loops on the hook. Yarn over, and pull through all loops on your hook to complete the cluster.

Round 4:
Begin by attaching the new yarn with a slip stitch into any of the chain-2 spaces. Chain four (this counts as the first treble crochet), then work two more treble crochets in the same space.

For the first side of the square, work three double crochets (dc) in the next chain-2 space, followed by three half double crochets (hdc) in the following chain-2 space, and finish the side with three more dc in the next chain-2 space. This completes the first side.

Next, create the first corner: work three treble crochets (tr) in the next chain-2 space, chain three, and then work three more treble crochets in the same space. This forms the corner.

Repeat this side-and-corner pattern for the remaining sides and corners of the square.

For the second side: Begin with three dc in the next chain-2 space, followed by three hdc in the following space, and end with three more dc in the next chain-2 space.

For the second corner: Work three tr in the next chain-2 space, chain three, and then three more tr in the same space.

For the third side: Start with three dc in the next chain-2 space, followed by three hdc, and finish with three dc in the next space.

For the third corner: Work three tr in the next chain-2 space, chain three, and repeat three more tr in the same space.

For the final side: Begin with three dc in the next chain-2 space, followed by three hdc, and finish with three more dc in the next space.

For the last corner: Work three tr in the same space as the initial tr, chain three, and join the round with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain-4.

Finishing Touches:
Congratulations on completing your sunburst granny square! To finish, trim the yarn and weave in any loose ends. If you’re planning to join multiple squares, consider blocking them to ensure their edges align perfectly and are smooth.
